Home appliance technology is simple: You push a few buttons and food is cooked, clothes are washed, and perishable products stay fresh. Much more happens behind the scenes, however, from the use of robotics and IT/OT technologies on the manufacturing line to the key roles data analytics, AI, and remote sensing play from delivery to the point where consumers plug in and use smart, connected appliances.

Many legacy systems are facing the challenges of Industry 4.0 and how to integrate their equipment with IT and the Cloud. This study presents how a large city in North America hired a systems integrator to integrate 120 water pumps, PLCs, and large sludge dewatering equipment with Azure IoT cloud for real-time dashboards, analytics, and machine learning. City managers use this information to shift from large capital purchases to an Equipment as a Service model based on actual usage fees. Using low-code, edge computing paradigms, this solution was designed and implemented in record time.

Technologies for buildings have now reached a maturity that they’re no longer the purview of the innovation function alone. They’re now being put to work to help organisations actively solve their part in societal issues: be that the race to net zero carbon, equity and inclusion in the workplace or solving the challenges of hybrid working. In this presentation, Dr Matthew Marson will highlight some past experiences towards helping solve those challenges and some of the errors made along the way.

Flying Forward is a 3-year collaborative EU-funded research project to develop a new Urban Air Mobility ecosystem. It incorporates Urban Air Mobility within a geospatial data infrastructure of cities. AIs and Spatial Twins are at the heart of that new infrastructure. They use sensor fusion and provide the capabilities to govern the behavior of autonomous drones flying in urban areas and integrate legal and spatial policies in the simulation and execution of the scenarios. (e.g. infrastructure inspection, delivery, surveillance)

31-01-2023 12:15 31-01-2023 12:45 Europe/Madrid Digital Twins and IoT: Integrating the Physical and Virtual Worlds

The value of Digital Twins can only be realized if Digital Twins and their virtual environment contain the same data and resulting information as their corresponding Physical Twins and real world environment. This means that the need for more extensive, faster, and richer sensing of the physical world will dramatically increase as valuable use cases proliferate. In addition, we will evolve from working in either the physical or virtual environments to integrating and working simultaneously in both environments. Dr. Grieves will discuss his views of the opportunities and issues of this evolution.
