Large energy consumers, from manufacturers to municipalities, are tasked with meeting aggressive carbon reduction targets but find this challenging with dated energy and facility infrastructure. How are these institutions pairing the use of advanced technologies and high efficiency systems with innovative financing mechanisms to achieve their goals? How did they invest in upgrades when there wasn't a generous budget line item in place? In this session, hear directly from large energy consumers on how they have implemented energy efficiency programs. What were the critical first steps? How did they get the required executive support? What was the timeline for the projects and how did they secure funding? What were the lessons learned and notable best practices? What were the results of these energy efficiency projects, and how have they impacted their planning for tomorrow?

The introduction of sensors and actuators in gas distribution networks has never been an easy task due to lack of power supply, which can make implementation difficult. Measuring parameters like gas flow and pressure at supply points in a simple and low-cost way has always been a key challenge.  This session will explore Gas Network Monitoring (GNM), a use case based on energy harvesting. Discover how you can monitor operation parameters (flow, pressure, noise...) at supply points and network stations (ERM) and in a simple, fast and low-cost manner.

Market economics and dynamics in the energy sector are changing rapidly, creating a compelling reason to consider new distributed energy solutions to support sustainability and carbon reduction objectives. Heightened energy prices and challenges to the larger grid have made localized distributed energy solutions highly cost competitive. The benefits of renewable energy with storage span even further: Imagine not being crippled by a grid outage, or sustaining full operational during a time of crisis? When the proper advanced technologies are in play, the combination of renewable energy coupled with a microgrid and battery storage enable true resiliency at its finest. In the session, we will learn about the experiences and stories of renewable energy implementation on U.S. military bases of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Fires caused by electric grid failures are increasing at an alarming rate, with complex problems involving local and global factors such as rapid weather changes or failing infrastructure unable to keep up with power fluctuations. To deal with climate change, green power is rapidly coming online, but accepting renewables into the grid creates complex issues with reverse power flows. The Napa fires last year, and perhaps the recent Camp Fire, may have been ignited by such power fluctuations. What the future of energy adaptive networks holds and the role of open collaboration to prevent the next catastrophic disaster. This presentation will describe Project EAN-Caltech use case with utility companies in Southern California to identify potential use of real time DER data to predict reactive power fluctuations and protect smart grid infrastructure.
