BC-05 – Using Blockchain to Secure the Digital Threat in Manufacturing

Sylvere Krima Engisis Senior Consultant and Research Associate, NIST
12:55 13:40 Europe/Madrid BC-05 – Using Blockchain to Secure the Digital Threat in Manufacturing

A digital transformation is often motivated by the promises of efficiency, performance, and quality gains thanks to the automation, integration, and streamlining of business and/or engineering processes. This reliance on digital data creates a new point of failure and a source of (digital) threats that need to be addressed. Failing to address these treats will not only prevent organizations from reaching the full potential of a digital transformation but can also result in catastrophic consequences. In this talk, we will discuss the digitization of manufacturing, the digital threat(s), and how organizations could leverage blockchain to reduce the digital threats.

Renewables, like solar or wind, have empowered everyone to become an energy generator. Now it's time for Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) to change the way we distribute and consume energy. This technology will reduce the price you pay, reduce blackouts and increase the amount of green energy we use. While DLTs have the ability to disrupt many different parts of our lives, one of the most significant areas it will affect is how we produce and consume electricity. This session will explore the impact of DLTs on the ways we personally distribute and consume electricity. We will examine real world examples used in the energy industry and what the future of energy generation, distribution and consumption will look like.

Sameer Jooma Anheuser-Busch InBev Director of Innovation & Analytics, Solutions Africa
12:45 13:30 Europe/Madrid BC-14 – Using Blockchain to create dignity for AB InBev’s smallholder farmers

Through the implementation of Blockchain technology AB InBev is able to have transparency of its entire supply chain, all the way to the farmer. These farmers are empowered as a result because they now have access to full accounting information, such as sales price, volume and payout via SMS - creating a verifiable economic identity and records - that they can take to a financial institution, allowing them access to credit and other financial service. Through the recent integration with the Mobile Network Operators, the farmer can be also have their funds disbursed in mobile, thereby reducing the cash risk and allowing for ease of remittances. This solution has the potential to transform and improve the lives of millions in the Agriculture sector in Africa, and across the world.

14:45 15:30 Europe/Madrid BC-06 – Acting for Food: Is blockchain technology an advantage for customers?

Carrefour was the first retailer in Europe to introduce Blockchain technology in food traceability. The retailer has been offering a new business usage of the blockchain to its customers since March 2018. Through a QRCode, the end-customer can retrieve all relevant information concerning Carrefour Quality Line chickens, eggs, oranges, milk, cheese, etc.  Accordingly, they may know the farmers that bred their specific chicken, the date of their eggs, the level of juice or sugar of their oranges, or see the cows or goats that produced milk.  This session will explore: why the project and why the use of blockchain? How the project was achieved and how it became an international program, and key lessons and next steps of the blockchain-based traceability journey.

Global retailers and local farmers are using blockchain to track food of all kinds from the original farm to the end customer. This can include tracking fruits & vegetables for safety purposes – making it easier to isolate contaminated foods. It can also include tracking wine & spirits for authenticity, reducing counterfeit goods and ensuring customers get what they paid for. This panel will discuss: What are the use cases that are most evolved in the agricultural industry today? How is blockchain changing partnerships & supplier/customer relationships through consortia? Why is blockchain a better solution than other technologies? What issues do players in the agricultural industry need to overcome to participate effectively in blockchain-based solutions?

Will smart contracts solve every (contractual) legal problem? Probably, not. Real life contracts are not simply "programs" that easily run down from the start to the end automatically. Many times life produces small events that alter the realization of legal transactions. This session will explore: how to apply the Roman law principles "pacta sunt servanda" and "Clausula rebus sic stantibus" concerning smart contracts,
security issues, and DAO hacks. Automated contract realization is a complex solution where software developers and lawyers will need to resolve many open issues in the future. How do we accomplish this in practice? This session will get you thinking about the important elements you need to get started.

BL-20 – Leveraging Blockchain Technology to Digitize Global Trade

Daniel Wilson Maersk GTD Director, TradeLens
Juan Jose Ruiz IBM Head of Strategy and Operations, TradeLens
09:00 09:45 Europe/Madrid BL-20 – Leveraging Blockchain Technology to Digitize Global Trade

The attributes of blockchain technology are ideally suited to large networks of disparate partners. A distributed ledger technology, blockchain establishes a shared, immutable record of all the transactions that take place within a network and then enables permissioned parties' access to trusted data in real time. By applying the technology to digitize global trade processes, a new form of command and consent can be introduced into the flow of information, empowering multiple trading partners to collaborate and establishing a single shared view of a transaction without compromising details, privacy or confidentiality. This session explores TradeLens, an open global trade platform using blockchain technology aimed at improving the cost of transportation, lack of visibility and inefficiencies with paper-based processes.

BC-21 – IP Protection, Licencing and Product Life Cyle tracking of additive manufactured products

Martin Holland PROSTEP AG Director Strategy and Business Development
09:50 10:35 Europe/Madrid BC-21 – IP Protection, Licencing and Product Life Cyle tracking of additive manufactured products

If a company provides data for 3D-printing, it is important that its IP is protected and the part is only printed as permitted. An airline must be sure that a spare part is original and not counterfeit and was manufactured with the right parameters. These challenges can be met by Blockchain technology and additive manufacturing. By combining both technologies it is possible to liscence printing processes and establish a secure chain of trust from the IP-Owner, integrating a print service provider and 3D-printer up to the end user. The presentation provides a live demonstration of these use cases, using blockchain.

The use case of trusted credentials is showing up across industries–education, energy & utilities, financial services, government. Blockchain-based systems can be used for verifying certificates, licenses, university degrees, & professional skills. For example, utility companies, in partnership with compliance organizations can implement a blockchain-based credentials system for technicians who go to people’s homes, where physical licenses are replaced by digital ones that can be activated and deactivated by those authorized, and seen, tracked and trusted by all ecosystem participants. In a similar fashion, educational institutions can digitize and secure degrees, qualifications & achievements using blockchain technology. This panel will discuss what has already been implemented, what projects are moving into production, as well as which organizations are driving this and why.
