Strategies and Practical Applications for Sustainable and Efficient Hydrocarbon Operations
Hydrocarbon facilities are constructed with automation system infrastructures designed to support operational productivity over multiple decades. Notably, these systems are conceptualized, implemented, and maintained as standalone, vertical solutions with limited integration capabilities. Consequently, the introduction of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, and Digital Twin concepts without operational disruption presents a significant challenge. This paper depicts engineering and technological strategies for adopting state-of-the-art digitization and digitalization technologies while preserving the extant foundation of instrumentation and automation infrastructure. This approach facilitates enhanced data acquisition and utilization for advanced applications, thereby improving productivity, inspection quality, predictive maintenance, and environmental and safety protocols.
