Image geolocation: from beginner to intermediate

HACKING VILLAGE Hacking Village

Tuesday 13, 16:35h - 17:50h | Hacking Village 2
13-05-2025 16:35 13-05-2025 17:50 Europe/Madrid Image geolocation: from beginner to intermediate The ability to know where a picture has been snapped is a classic part of OSINT investigations. With the raise of social media and the popularization of smartphones, it is becoming difficult for something noteworthy to happen without an image being produced and circulated. However, these images can also be wrongfully used or even generated by AI to spread disinformation. Geolocating a picture or a video is an important tool to debunk false claims or authenticate a certain version of an event. But the multitude of investigative possibilities a picture offers can feel daunting for a beginner: should we look for metadata? Pay attention to the mountain in the background? Focus on the length of the shadows and position of the sun? In this workshop, we will present different geolocation techniques: talk about their limits, their requirements and inform the attendees about how difficult they are to use. We will illustrate these methods with specific case studies Hacking Village 2
